Brief Biography

Michael was born in London England and obtained a B.A. in Fine Art from Newcastle University and a P.G.C.E. from the University of London. After obtaining his qualifications he worked in art education, both as teacher and university examiner, although he continued to paint and exhibit his own work throughout that 24 year period.  In 2000 he took early retirement, emigrated to Canada, and became a full time professional painter.

Expertise

In my paintings I explore surface, shape, line, colour, texture and tone to create compositions in order to articulate and form images which hopefully express my concerns about the future of our lives on this planet and as a celebration of the many wonderful experiences we can enjoy.

I begin work in an intuitive and gestural way, burying and unearthing marks, lines and  gestures through an energetic process of growth and destruction which mirrors both the acts of nature and mankind's activities on our landscape. Although I begin in this way, the outcomes are usually the result of many preparatory pieces and investigations in a variety of media, together with relevant written and numerical data/information.
